She's also low-key caring, and will be the "mother hen" type to the younger officers.

Personal History Vila was born on Bajor during the Occupation. Her father was a fighter, and her mother was a teacher until the Dominion destroyed their home. They were fleeing often, seeking refuge often underground or in places where the Cardassians hadn’t yet made inroads-such as far flung villages in Hathon, and the Southern Islands.

When she was eight years old, the family was finally found and captured, and placed in an internment/labor camp. Being a young woman, she was mostly spared the indignities that come with forced labor, but she DID have to do menial physical tasks, such as sweep or mop the cemented floors of the camp's bunk rooms, assist in the replimats with cleaning, or in the sickbay, cleaning up blood, vomit, etc. Being so young, the abject poverty and humiliation caused trauma and she's still not over it.

The arrival of the Federation when she was ten to free them (as the Dominion's presence in Bajor was defeated) was a godsend; Vila, the middle child of three, remembered being hosted on a Federation hospital ship (the USS Louis Pasteur) until the end of the war. Her father was killed in action fighting alongside the Federation (but was not a Starfleet officer himself) in a friendly-fire incident, and her mother never remarried. Life after the war was rough; they had lost everything, so instead of returning to Bajor, their mom took a civilian position in Starfleet, as a teacher, and they decided to stay on the Pasteur for a few years, then they moved to the USS Abraham Lincoln, and, finally, the USS Braveheart (another hospital ship) before she graduated High School. She joined the Academy from there, among the first Bajorans to do so. She got a degree in Chemistry and Xenobiology. While at the academy, she met a man, Hihjal Tors, a Trill. They dated for the first two years before they broke up. After that, she dated a woman, Dulo Tek, a Romulan. They dated until her first posting. Finally, Vila met and married a Terran man, Ben Johnson, a scientist on her first posting, SB8, and they were married for four years before they divorced. They had no children. Vila is currently single, is open to romance but is currently not looking hard.
Her distrust/loss of faith in the Fleet has been a slow but methodical loss-between her earlier trauma from the Occupation, loss of her father, and then her contentious divorce, she's a woman who could really benefit from some intensive counseling, but will NOT seek it out on her own. She has a small "record" of write ups for sassing her commanding officers, and even one for dereliction of duty-though she still maintains that she was justified. She was leading a small team to investigate and ferret out a few non-corporeal beings who had taken over the minds of a group of Roma Magna citizens, and was conducting ritualistic-cult like sacrifices of these people. The team infiltrated, was discovered when Vila spoke too loudly into her subdermal transponder, and were beaten and nearly killed. She took the brunt of the attack-saving the other two officers she was with-but after her release from medical, she was put up for Captain's Mast, and lost time-in-rank for 6 months.
She is also struggling with a crisis of faith-if the Prophets were so great, WHY was an 8 year old child subjected to such horror? Also, why hasn't Bajor joined the Federation yet? The Federation saved her life (or so she believes), and this anger, justified or not, drives her actions. One of her biggest obstacles for herself is the fact that she is simply unable to save everyone, and that doesn't sit well with whatever sense of justice she still has.
