Brevity in the details

0 words; about a 1 minute read

Commander Stewart sat in his temporary quarters on DS9, reviewing all aspects of the USS Deliverance, her crew compliment, and all pertinent files of the upgrades and changes. After each item was displayed, Gabriel issued a one word command to the terminal: "Accepted."

He had been at this every day since his arrival, and this was his third review of the items. For being known for his brevity in his communications, he was also know for spending an unusual amount of time reviewing the details of any task he was assigned.

Stewart completed his third review and decided it was time to eat.

"Computer, meal 127."

The computer responded by instructing the replicator to produce the meal, which had been pre-programmed by the Commander immediately after arriving on the space station. This allowed him to keep his communications to a minimum.

Something was slightly off with meal 127, but he could not put his finger on it.

"Computer, verify meal preparation sequence."

The computer beeped, then responded, "The meal preparation sequence was modified by the Chef."

"Elaborate."

"The Chef added this modification." The modification was displayed on the screen.

Gabriel stared at the console for several minutes, all the while continuing to consume the meal, tasting every bite. Finally, after the meal was gone, he replied with one word: "Acceptable."

There was a consistent beeping sound that interrupted the Commander. He looked at the chronometer, and realized he had missed the shuttle to the Deliverance.

One word escaped his lips: "Damn"
